help jamie make a difference

03/11/2011 @ 12:42 | story by Michelle Smith

Email your local MP to Keep Kids cooking in school!

Jamie’s new school food manifesto calls for the government to ensure that cooking back is put back on the school curriculum for both primary and secondary schools as part of its current curriculum review. Jamie believes that cooking is a life skill and all children must leave school able to prepare a basic range of fresh, seasonal nutritious meals if we are to stand a chance in fighting the rise in obesity and its diet related diseases. He isn’t the only one that thinks cooking is crucial. Several MP’s also agree, in fact MP Zac Goldsmith recently tabled an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to keep cooking lessons in our schools which has already secured support from other MPs from many different parties, but more support is needed if we want to make sure the Government sit up and take notice!

To increase the numbers and get more MP’s on board Jamie’s fellow school foodies at the Sustain Children’s Food Campaign have started their own campaign where you can get in touch with your local MP, check out if they have signed up and if they haven’t and ask them to get their pen out! So do your bit to make real change, and help Jamie get cooking back in our schools, click here to go to the Sustain website and make sure your local MP is on board!

1. Gillian Simbaeva 20/01/2012 @ 17:39 The Jamie Oliver Foundation is doing great work and I think that it is fantastic that the team is working so hard with other agencies to support parents to make changes at school. I am really looking forward to the Kitchen Garden Foundation and I hope that all primary schools try to take part in this.
2. paul mizen e-foods 12/11/2011 @ 15:16 the government don't care about our children cooking we do a lot of work with schools and i am still surprised by the amount of children that don't know where simple products grown like potatoes yes we all know they under ground but to my surprise some of the kids didn't.

but as parents we all have to all do our bit to children learn life skills from their parents
4. jacqueline cairns 11/11/2011 @ 14:16 It's fantastic that Jamie is so passionate about school dinners and healthy eating. I have followed his ethos all the way, so much so I have put myself forward to provide school catering - this is like climbing Mount Everest! Naturally I turned to Jamie for some advice and help but the response was "Jamie is too busy"! Isn't it a shame that when we do try and make a difference and we look for direction and help we find that when there aren't any cameras or media around it simply isn't available.
6. Shawn 09/11/2011 @ 01:42 You bet, all children are in danger without tools to keep them alive. It is great to hear about Jamie's food revolution. We are the 99% and getting stronger. I am a Chef for years and wish it all started sooner.

Libby Phelps. 03/11/2011 @ 20:20 For years I've echoed this.I learnt to cook at Home and School.5 yrs of cooking and left with CSE and GCE O'level in Cooking in 1975.I feel so passionate that children should be taught cooking.I often wonder why it was removed from school.I've 9 children all been taught to cook.
