Unusual Clay Oven
I was asked on the weekend to help some students build a Cob/Clay oven. The students were very imaginative and decided to make the oven resemble a Turtle.....They called the oven Taylor.

Re: Unusual Clay Oven
Taylor looks a fine oven Terry , sounds like there is a bit of ongoing work to do before itd up and running fully so let is know how the clay dries and I was wondering if Taylor would manage to keep his head once the clay dries and fingers crossed that it does not crack and drop off !

Re: Unusual Clay Oven
.....Thanks for the kind words......yes the oven is still ongoing. I haven't yet been back to scoop out the sand form, but shall do in the next few days ....and light a couple of curing fires to help the clay dry out. The base is only a temp base, so the oven will be lifted up with forks on a tractor onto a sturdy wooden frame.
The Turtle design was a last minute thought from the students, so I happened to have some carbon fibre rods with me which are used in Modular/refractory ovens. I inserted them into the neck so even if cracking appears, the neck will stay intact.......The turtle's head however might just get it's nose burnt.......only time will tell if he/she gets to keep his/her head.

Thank-you Birdymum
Sue.....the owner of the small holding has given up her life......as it was, and opened up her farm to helping people from the local community, plus other organisations including ex-servicemen who have lost limbs in the line of duty, getting everybody involved in activities to suit their abilities. I'm very proud to be able to volunteer my services into a cause which is close to my heart....besides...it's great fun.

The footprint needed is no more than 1.2m sq. The total cost was about £80.
Go for it. You won't be disappointed. Here's the curing fire pic...

Hi Terry, having shown the missus to be your pictures she's not too averse. It does look great! With our new garden being so small I'm going to stick with my plan to build a bbq as I'd use it more but I'd not rule out an oven like this in the future!
